Dalai Lama Visit

The Dalai Lama’s recent visit to Scotland raised an interesting question about our Governments involvement with the Chinese regime. It has been muted in some quarters that by not offering an official welcome to The Dalai Lama the SNP were bowing to the wishes of the Chinese Government.

In response to this the SNP have said the visit is a pastoral visit and no political leaders from the UK would be having official meetings with him. In should be mentioned that the UK PM has recently met with the Dalai Lama.

Whether the SNP have bowed to Chinese pressure is something individuals will have to decide. I have always been uncomfortable with The Scottish Governments involvement with the Chinese, I do find it strange that the SNP trumpet the cause of Independence for a small nation but are more than happy to brag about their involvement with a regime who deny another small nation the very same freedoms the SNP aspire to, and I do think it would be fair to say that the people of Scotland have slightly more freedom than those of Tibet.

Now I know it’s all about business and showing that First Minister Salmond is an “A” List Politician so hence Scotland can stride the world stage with the big boys. But for this voter it does leave a bad taste in the mouth.

  1. I love the Dalai Lama, it is funny to see he has such a good sense of humor 🙂
